St Leonard’s parish began in the 1950s, served by the Augustinians from Saints Peter and Paul. The first church is now the parish hall. The current church was opened in 1974.
Saint Fergus parish combined with St Leonards in the early 1980s to form the current parish community serving Downfield, St Mary’s, Ardler, Bridgefoot and other outlying villages.
The April 2019 Dunkeld Diocese page on the sad passing of Mgr. Hugh McInally, recalls that his first appointment as Parish Priest in 1972 was to St Fergus. The page notes that in the new parish of Ss Leonard & Fergus “Such were the numbers wishing to attend Midnight Mass, tickets had to be issued as it was always standing room only.”
Also as noted in this page Ss Leonard & Fergus was a centre for many of the Dunkeld Diocese Lourdes pilgrimage activity for many years with Mgr Neil Gallagher as Dunkeld’s Lourdes Youth Director.
